BUYING AND USING PROFESSIONAL RODENTICIDE

The responsible use of rodenticides plays an important role in protecting public health, food production and property, while also helping to safeguard wildlife and the wider environment.

The UK Rodenticide Stewardship Scheme, led by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU UK), ensures that professional rodenticides are used safely, responsibly and only by suitably qualified users. 

DO I NEED A QUALIFICATION?

Yes.

Since 1 January 2026, anyone purchasing or using professional-use rodenticides must be able to provide proof of competence at the point of sale.

You must have either:

• A CRRU UK-approved qualification gained within the last five years, or
   
• An older CRRU UK-approved qualification plus current membership of a CRRU UK-approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme, such as BASIS PROMPT.

If you cannot provide the required evidence, suppliers will not be able to sell professional-use rodenticides.

WHAT QUALIFICATION DO I NEED?

HOW BASIS PROMPT SUPPORTS YOU

BASIS PROMPT is recognised by CRRU UK as an approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

If your CRRU-approved qualification is more than five years old, maintaining your BASIS PROMPT membership and completing the required CRRU CPD each membership year helps demonstrate your ongoing competence under the stewardship requirements.

As part of your annual BASIS PROMPT CPD requirements, members must complete 3 CRRU CPD points each membership year.

FREE ONLINE TRAINING ON BASIS CLASSROOM

BASIS PROMPT members have free access to a growing range of CRRU-approved online learning through the BASIS Classroom, developed in collaboration with Killgerm.

Members can choose from six online modules, with each successfully completed course awarding 1 CRRU CPD point.

Current modules include:

• CRRU Updates
• Environmental Risk Assessments
• Burrow Baiting
• Permanent Baiting
• Rodenticide Resistance
• Exposure of Wildlife to Rodenticides

Complete any three modules during your membership year to achieve the required 3 CRRU CPD points needed for BASIS PROMPT membership.

The courses have been designed to help pest professionals stay up to date with the latest stewardship guidance, legislation and best practice, while offering the flexibility to complete training online at a time that suits them.
